The Dining Room

The play, set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, is a romp through some five decades of Twentieth Century American family mores. The action presents a mosaic of 18 interrelated and overlapping vignettes - some funny, some touching. The actors change roles, personalities and ages as they portray a wide variety of characters, from eight to eighty --- misbehaving little boys to stern grandfathers to giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids. Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother's infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn't recognize her own sons at Christmas dinner; a daughter, her marriage in shambles, pleads to return home, etc. Scenes move swiftly through time and character to create an exceptional theatrical experience of delightful humor and compassion.
